My name is Jessica Ackermann, I am married and a mommy to 4 beautiful little angels, 3 on earth and one in heaven... I am fully bilingual with Afrikaans being my home language. I was born in Alberton and still reside here. I am a reborn Christian and believer of God.
Losing my child and almost my life in 2008 in a vehicle accident has shaken my whole being. It took me a while to search the meaning and the wonder of what I actually should be doing… initially after thinking I would be studying more towards the corporate industry I was surprised to learn and feel such a big passion burning inside.... something very exhilarating, powerful and challenging.
I have come to realize it is "to serve other mothers"
To 'mother the mother.'
Being a mother whom birthed all 4 my pregnancies through caesarean made me realize how wonderful it would have been back then if I had someone with me all the time, to assist me, to guide me in the information I so greatly needed. I know today how very misinformed i was about my choices and that my choices already made had consequences...I had my husband through it all, but it would have changed my emotions having someone nurturing what I felt, just with added comfort. Having gone through the horrid ‘disease’ of Post Natal Depression/Psychosis with my first born in 2006 and then again with my 3rd born in 2012, being hospitalized because of PND and working closely with PNDSA, getting support, giving support in the road to recovery has just exploded my passion for birth and support for women during labour as well as caesareans pre and postnatal.
I decided to follow my passion and become a Doula. I started off my training through Wombs SA at Wits Faculty of Health Sciences in June 2013 through Barbara Hanrahan and graduated as a Certified Doula in September 2014. I am also closely involved with PNDSA (post natal depression association of South Africa) as a PND Support Specialist. Another firm passion is Placentaphogy and the encapsulation of ones placenta - as the benefits of this has been shown and proven to be remarkable. I have also qualified as a Pregnancy, Baby & Swedish Massage Practitioner in 2017 through Balancing Touch. Having lost a child and often being exposed to the loss of a little one has intrigued me into studying to become a Bereavement Doula through Mama Nurture - assisting families who are anticipating or experiencing loss - miscarriage, stillbirth, terminal diagnosis during pregnancy, sudden infant death and NICU care and support in the perinatal period. I am also registered with PATCH SA (Palliative treatment for children).
It continues to be an honour to be allowed into the sacred space of each birth & each family to support, each family to nurture and to be able to encourage and assist each couple in their journey into parenthood.
